I love a weekend getaway. It’s short and easy to fit into your schedule, provides some much-needed time to disconnect from your day-to-day life, and is a chance to explore your own backyard. And, luckily, there are tons of amazing weekend getaways near Charlotte, North Carolina to take advantage of.
So whether you’re planning a solo trip, girls weekend, romantic getaway, or family vacation—there’s something for everyone.
Here are 12 must-see weekend getaways near Charlotte to add to your list today.

We are spoiled in North Carolina with plenty of options, many of which are within a four-hour radius of Charlotte—perfect for that weekend getaway. You can see a lot in two days, and it's nice to make the most of your weekends when you get the chance.
Here are a few highlights based on the type of activity you might want to do, and then we’ll dig into more specific Charlotte weekend getaway spots below.

- Hiking: Try Linville Falls near Asheville—stunning, stunning, stunning. You'll love it here!
- Scenic Drives: Take your time on the Blue Ridge Parkway, taking in all the stunning views. You can drive sections of it from cities like Asheville, Blowing Rock, and Mount Airy.
- Wineries: Check out Raffaldini near Winston-Salem, Serre in Mount Airy, or Treehouse near Monroe. I've been to all of these spots and they're the best place to go for wine tastings with a view.
- Beaches: There are so many to choose from for your weekend trip. Head to Carolina Beach, Myrtle Beach (one of my favorite spots to spend time with my son!), Wilmington, Isle of Palms, and Outer Banks to name a few!
- Casinos: Visit Catawba Two Kings Casino in Kings Mountain and Caesars (in Virginia).
- Safari (yes, a safari in North Carolina!): Explore Lazy Five Ranch and Zootastic near Mooresville. Or check out the North Carolina Zoo and see the animals—I loved seeing a polar bear here!
- History and culture: Head to Charleston to explore historic architecture, museums, food, and cultural events.

1. Asheville, North Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 130 miles (just over two hours to drive).
Why go here? Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is the perfect blend of stunning scenery, history, and a vibrant arts scene.
Things to do in Asheville:
- Families will enjoy the Western North Carolina Nature Center or a ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.
- Couples can wander through the Biltmore Estate and enjoy trips to wineries like the Biltmore Winery or Burntshirt Vineyards (also fun for a friend’s getaway!)
- Outdoor enthusiasts will love hiking Pisgah National Forest and Linville Falls, or driving through the stunning Blue Ridge Parkway.






3. Myrtle Beach, North Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 175 miles (about 3.5 hours to drive)
Why go here? If you're looking for a classic beach getaway, Myrtle Beach has it all! Sun, sand, boardwalk fun, and plenty of entertainment and food options.
Things to do in Myrtle Beach:
- Families can ride the SkyWheel for oceanfront views or visit Ripley's Aquarium at Broadway at the Beach.
- Couples can take a sunset stroll on the beach, book a waterfront dinner at Sea Captain's House, and enjoy live music at the Bowery.
- Outdoor enthusiasts can tee off at one of the many golf courses, kayaking in Huntington Beach State Park, or—of course—hit the beach!
- Wine lovers can head to Duplin Winery for a tasting.
Myrtle Beach is one of my favorite weekend getaways from Charlotte because I love the beach. The boardwalk and center Myrtle Beach area can be busier and more touristy, while Garden City is a quieter area that tends to be more family-friendly.
If you need somewhere to stay, I highly recommend this amazing oceanview condo in Garden City! It's just a block away from the beach and I happen to know that the owners are pretty fantastic! Whenever I'm going just solo for relaxation, I tend to stay more north of Myrtle Beach in the Briarcliff Acres or Cherry Grove area, where I find it's a little less touristy and kid-centric (though you'll have to drive for the better restaurant options).
2. Greenville, South Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 100 miles (just under two hours to drive)
Why go here? Known for it’s walkable downtown and outdoor adventures, Greenville has lots to do for a fun weekend getaway. It’s a charming Southern city with a modern twist!
Things to do in Greenville:
- Families can check out the Falls Park on the Reedy and the Children’s Museum of the Upstate.
- Couples can catch dinner in the West End Historic District that has tons of great restaurants, followed by a show at the Peace Center.
- Outdoor enthusiasts can try biking the Swamp Rabbit Trail or hiking Paris Mountain State Park.
- Wine lovers should check out City Scape Winery.
5. Blowing Rock, North Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 90 miles (just under two hours to drive)
Why go here? A picturesque mountain town, Blowing Rock is a perfect spot to either cozy up and relax, or head out for some adventures.
Things to do in Blowing Rock:
- Families will enjoy riding the Tweetsie Railroad or checking out Mystery Hill.
- Couples can explore the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum or try the Grandfather Vineyard and Winery, which has epic mountain views.

- Wine lovers can head to Noni Bacca Winery, which has a wide selection of local wines to try.
6. Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 80 miles (about 1.5 hours to drive).
Why go here? Full of Southern charm, this town has rich historical roots. Explore the Moravian settlement of Old Salem to learn more about the cultural history.
What to do in Winston-Salem:
- Families can heck out the Old Salem Museums & Gardens or the Kaleideum Science Museum.
- Couples may enjoy touring the Reynolda House Museum of American Art.
- Outdoor enthusiasts can walk the scenic Salem Lake Trail or hike Pilot Mountain.
- Wine lovers can head to Childress Vineyards or Raffaldini Vineyards (one of my favorite spots—simply gorgeous setting with amazing wine.


7. Raleigh, North Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 170 miles (just under three hours to drive)
Why go here? North Carolina’s capital city has tons to see and do, ranging from interesting cultural experiences to great restaurants to outdoor fun.
Things to do in Raleigh:
- Families can visit the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences or Pullen Park.
- Couples will enjoy exploring the North Carolina Museum of Art, or try some fine dining in the Warehouse District.
- Outdoor enthusiasts can hike in William B. Umstead State Park or paddleboard on Lake Johnson.
- Wine lovers can head just outside the city to try out Chatham Hill Winery.


8. Charleston, South Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 210 miles (about 3.5 hours to drive)
Why go here? This historic coastal city is known for it’s beautiful waterfront, cobblestone streets, antebellum architecture, and excellent dining options.
Where to stay: This stunning guesthouse.
Things to do in Charleston:
- Families will love the South Carolina Aquarium as well as a carriage ride through downtown.
- Couples can stroll through the Battery & Waterfront Park or dine in a low country restaurant.
- Outdoor enthusiasts can relax on Folly Beach or kayak through the marshes of Shem Creek.
Charleston is one of my personal favorite weekend getaways because it combines the beach and charming homes! One of my good friends says—and I agree—it’s a great spot to experience southern culture (figuratively, and literally, as it’s a top culinary destination in the country!). Plus, she has a fantastic rental property there that is perfect if you've got a bigger group going to visit.
Here are some other things that make Charleston unique:
- Rich cultural history.
- Impressive beaches (Sullivans Island, Isle of Palms, and Folly Beach each have their own distinct personalities—and loyal fan bases!).
- Great eateries (try Saltwater Cowboys or Red's Ice House along Shem Creek to see frolicking dolphins dockside.
- Brunch—a cultural staple in Charleston (try options like Lost Dog Out or Poogan's Porch).
- Community events like local festivals, farmers markets, and oyster roasts.
9. Boone, North Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 115 miles (about two hours to drive)
Why go here? Boone is a college town with a fun, adventurous spirit. There is lots to see and do here year-round.
Things to do in Boone:
- Families will enjoy visiting the Appalachian Ski Mountain or Foggy Mountain Gem Mine.
- Couples can stay in a cozy cabin for their getaway, checking out the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts or Grandfather Vineyard and Winery for wine tasting in a beautiful location.
- Outdoor enthusiasts can hike Grandfather Mountain (the views over Boulder Field are absolutely stunning, especially in autumn with the changing colors!) or whitewater raft on the Watauga River.


10. Hendersonville, North Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 110 miles (about two hours)
Why go here? A charming small town, Hendersonville is the place to explore apple orchards, wineries, and boutique shops in the thriving downtown area.
Things to do in Hendersonville:
- Families can explore the Hands On! Children’s Museum or try gem mining at Elijah Mountain Gem Mine.
- Couples can stroll downtown, window shopping and trying out different places to eat.
- Outdoor enthusiasts can hike DuPont State Recreation Forest or visit Jump Off Rock for incredible views.
- Wine lovers can check out Burntshirt Vineyards or Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards.
11. Mount Airy, North Carolina
Distance from Charlotte: 110 miles (about two hours to drive)
Why go here? Famous as the inspiration for Mayberry from the Andy Griffith Show, this charming town has tons to see and do.
What to do in Mount Airy:
- Families can tour the Andy Griffith Museum or visit the Mayberry Replica Courthouse.
- Couples can go for a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway or visit local shops in the downtown area.
- Outdoor enthusiasts can try their hand at fishing in the Ararat River or go hiking on Pilot Mountain.
