Twice the size of Central Park at a whopping 2,100 acres, the Anne Springs Close Greenway is a gorgeous nature preserve. It's perfectly located in Fort Mill—a natural oasis close to the city. Besides hiking, running, and walking, you can also mountain bike, kayak or paddleboard, fish, go horseback riding, try yoga, or camp!
Note that there is a $14.00/adult admission fee if you do not have a membership ($72.00/year).
3. Latta Nature Preserve

Hiking in Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Mountains are one of my favorite spots to go hiking near Charlotte, especially in the fall when the leaves start to change color! There are some amazing hikes that let you experience awesome views of the forest, rivers, falls, and more. It's one of the best things to do in Charlotte during the fall... or anytime, really! Here are some of my top trail picks (among many others to choose from!):
1. Tanawha Trail: Boulder Field to Calloway Peak Overlook
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 3 miles
Elevation gain: 173 feet
Trail type: Out-and-back
Driving time from Charlotte: 2.5 hours (directions here)
This moderate trail takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete, making it a popular trail for all types of hikers. Dogs are welcome on leash, and you'll explore great river views along the way.

2. Crabtree Falls Trail

Hiking in Grandfather Mountain State Park
All Charlotte folks know how popular Grandfather Mountain is for hiking—and for good reason. It's not too far out of the city, but you feel like you're in another world. There are so many trail options to choose from; I've picked a couple highlights, but you can see the full list of hiking options in Grandfather Mountain State Park here.
1. Grandfather Trail to Calloway Peak
Difficulty: Hard
Length: 4.3 miles
Elevation gain: 1,578 feet
Trail type: Out-and-back
Driving time from Charlotte: 2.5 hours (directions here)
Take in some seriously epic views on this challenging—but rewarding—trail. Running along the length of the summit ridge from Grandfather Mountain to Calloway Peak (Watauga Viewpoint), you'll experience some challenging technical hiking sections and a variety of scenery. Most hikers need 4+ hours to complete, and it's not recommended for children, pets, or inexperienced hikers.
2. Nuwati Trail
Difficulty: Moderate

Trail type: Out-and-back
Driving time from Charlotte: 2 hours (directions here)
Requiring about 1.5 hours to complete, this trail is known for its rocky terrain and stream crossings, so good footwear is a must! It follows an old logging road through the forest, and the elevation gain is gradual. While you won't see sweeping vistas from a mountaintop, it's a beautiful and peaceful experience in nature.
Hiking in Black Mountain
A list of hiking trails near Charlotte cannot be complete without mentioning Black Mountain's huge variety of trails. From easy walks to technically challenging ascents, there's something for everyone!
1. Catawba Falls River Trail

Relatively flat and possible to finish in about an hour, this trail offers major bang for your buck when it comes to views! The trail has beautiful sites along the way—including historical buildings from the 1920s if you take some of the small side trails—and ends at stunning waterfalls. It's a kid-friendly (and dog-on-leash friendly!) option, perfect for a family weekend outing.

2. Lake Tomahawk Walking Trail
Difficulty: Easy

Popular with mountain bikers due to its steep descent, hiking this trail is a worthwhile challenge! You'll experience a variety of terrain with great views along the way, culminating with epic mountaintop vistas.
Hiking in Crowders Mountain State Park
With twin peaks of Crowders Mountain and The Pinnacle, hiking in Crowders Mountain State Park does not disappoint. A short one-hour ride from the city, it's a must-visit option for hiking near Charlotte. Get ready for some awesome views—and steep uphill workouts to get to those awesome views.
1. Pinnacle Trail to Kings Pinnacle
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 4.2 miles
Elevation gain: 777 feet
Trail type: Out-and-back
Driving time from Charlotte: One hour (directions here)
Leading up to one of the two peaks in Crowders Mountain State Park, this trail is a popular choice for hikers in the Charlotte area. It takes an average of two hours to complete, but it has a steep last third of the section with some rock scrambling, so be prepared to work hard for your views!
