Refreshing Your Room After a Divorce:
6 Low-Cost Tips to Try Today
Author: Jamie Milam
Date: February 20, 2025
Life is full of transitions, and divorce is a big one. There can feel like so many things to do after a divorce and you don't know where to start. I don't have to tell you how much it fundamentally shifts your life and leaves you re-evaluating many parts of it—including your living space.
And if you're like me, your home is your sanctuary—it's where you relax, recharge, and reflect. But when your relationship ends, the home you felt so comfortable in may start to feel unfamiliar or even triggering.
That's why refreshing your room after a divorce is a key self-care step to take so you can move forward. Many women, especially those who stay in their marital home post-divorce, can benefit from sprucing up your bedroom after separating. Instead of seeing an empty closet, bare office, or unchanged bedroom that brings up painful emotions, you can reclaim it as your space.
Refreshing your room after divorce isn't just about updating the decor—it's about shifting the energy of your space. It's one of the first things you can do after a divorce to help you move forward. When you intentionally create an environment that feels good to you, it can help you mentally and emotionally step into this new phase of life with confidence and positivity.
Are you in? Let's talk refreshing your room after divorce—six tips to try today.
6 Easy Ways to Refresh Your Room After a Divorce
All of these tips are fairly easy and cost-effective to do... so much so that you might be wondering what the point is! But let me tell you from experience—simple changes make a big difference. When I took time to change my bedroom post-divorce, it truly transformed the entire energy in there and was an important step in my healing process.
Here are some of the best ways to refresh your room after a divorce:

1. Swap Out Your Bedding
Your bed is where you rest, dream, and start each new day—pretty integral to your life and well-being. A new set of sheets, cozy duvet, or different color scheme can truly make the world of a difference.
Swapping out my bedding was the first thing I did after my divorce. It felt like a small act of self-care to have fresh bedding ready when I came home from vacation and my ex had moved out. Waking up in a bed that felt like mine again was a mindset shift I needed, reminding me that I was in control of my healing journey. Tap into your personal style here, too, whether you're into boho vibes or minimalism all the way.
2. Repaint Your Wall Colors
Similar to swapping out your bedding, a new wall color is a simple shift that has a huge impact. Not only does it visually change the entire look, but it can really shift the energy of a space.
Color has a big impact on your emotions and can help you create the vibe you're looking for. For me, I'd always had a light & airy room—it always made me feel ready to get up and out of bed quickly (maybe something a bit more subconscious to that🤷♀️), so as a change I wanted something a little darker and moodier. I settled on doing an accent wall in a jewel tone that felt feminine but moody. I still love it nearly four years later! Whether you go for a calming neutral, playful pastel, or bold statement wall—choose a color that makes you feel good.
3. Add Artwork
Your post-divorce era is all about rediscovering who you are, what you love, and what your next steps are. You may have lost some sense of self over the last years or, if not, are ready to keep expressing who you are! Either way, artwork helps bring your personality into your space.
To infuse some of my style and energy into my bedroom, I chose some prints from the Poster Store, which has so many amazing options to choose from at an affordable price. These simple additions made my space feel intentional, warm, empowering, and full of positive energy. Choose something that speaks to you!
4. Organize Your Closet
A lot of women, myself included, find an empty close to be a big emotional trigger. That space where your ex's clothes once hung can set off some strong emotions! In fact, within that first week I found myself just simply moving some items over to the other side to not feel that empty area every time I walked in there at the beginning of the day. This one simple step motivated me to then make this space mine too. So, instead of leaving it untouched, take this opportunity to organize and refresh.
Start by pulling out your clothes and sorting through them to see what you want to keep or not. Feeling uneasy about getting rid of things just yet in this new season? That's okay too. Try my tip that I use every spring to get you started. Then, grab some stylish storage bins and hangers and re-organize your clothes to fill the full space. This brings a sense of clarity and control, reinforcing your mindset that this is your space (and your life!).
5. Incorporate Feminine Elements
Whether it's plush throw pillows, a cozy rug, soft lighting, or scented candles, adding a touch of warmth and femininity can shift the entire energy of your bedroom. That shift has a big, positive impact on your mindset, helping you steps back into your own individuality and power.
I love the idea of adding lighting to the back of a standup mirror to bring in some mood lighting. Bonus, this set not only comes with a remote and is dimmable, but it also has a timer so if you fall asleep reading a book, no worries! These elements bring in a sense of comfort and personal expression, building that private sanctuary you feel safe in.

6. Rearrange Your Furniture
Your room previously accommodated two people and the layout probably reflected that. Sometimes the simplest way to refresh your room after a divorce is to just shift the furniture around! You can move your bed to a new wall, swap out a nightstand, create a reading corner, or reposition a mirror to create a fresh, new feel. Changing your physical surroundings helps reinforce the fresh-start mindset.
As you're making changes to your bedroom after your divorce, you may also want to consider stocking up on single women essentials like a tool kit, folding ladder, and security features. These things can help you make changes to your home and feel safe and secure while you're living there.
The Emotional Impact of Refreshing Your Space After Divorce

While these changes are simple, they're powerful. By taking action steps to refresh your room after a divorce, you're refreshing your life. You're turning the page, starting a new chapter—whatever you want to call it. You're showing yourself that this is your space and your life.
This is not just symbolic, either. Making small adjustments in your home can help you:
- Reclaim your independence and identity
- Reduce emotional triggers by knowing what to expect after divorce and planning for it
- Feel more secure and at peace
- Cultivate your personal style and sense of self
- Step confidently into a new phase of life
- Cultivate positive energy and a fresh perspective
- Encourage excitement to coming home
Every item you choose to keep, replace, or add carries energy. When you make intentional choices, you shift the emotional tone of your home and shift it from the past to the future. It's not just about aesthetics (though that's nice, too)—it's creating a space for your next chapter.
Divorce is a difficult transition, yes. But there's also an opportunity to redefine your life on your own terms. Refreshing your room after a divorce can be the first step to do so.
