Consistency Over Talent:

4 Reasons to Be Consistent as an Entrepreneur

All NBA players are talented athletes—we know this. But they’re not all Kobe Bryant.

Before his passing in 2020, Kobe was famous for his work ethic which had him practicing longer and harder than most of his teammates. And because of it, he was a highly-respected champion with many scoring titles and MVPs to his name.

Do you know what this is a case of? Consistency over talent.

Yes, Kobe’s talent helped—and yours does, too—but it was not the thing that set him apart from his peers.

His consistency is what set him apart.

This isn’t always such a popular idea in our culture of instant gratification. We like the quick fix, the easy answer. But the truth isn’t always so easy. It’s consistency over time that brings results, both personally and professionally.

And this is good news for entrepreneurs and business owners. It means that when you show up regularly and consistently, you can take your business to the next level. You can reach your goals and build the life you want by consistently showing up.

Wondering how this all works? I talked about four powerful ways consistency outpaces talent on episode 28 of The Determined AF podcast—check it out or read on here.

4 Ways Consistency as an Entrepreneur Outpaces Talent

I like to think of consistency as a pillar of success. It’s that thing you use as a foundation for which to build your business and entrepreneurship goals on. And, it’s something we can all do.

Success requires a tipping point—you put in the work, day in and day out, to build towards your goals. Then, it hits the tipping point where you start to see the results of your consistency and hard work.

In my experience, it can take somewhere between 3-6 months of consistency before you start to see the results. And that’s if you’re showing up every day and doing the meaningful things that produce results.

So, don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t happen instantly. We’re not talking about leveraging your talent for a quick result and then crashing. Instead, it’s about consistency over time to build real and lasting progress.

Here are four reasons consistency is so important and how you can implement more in your work and life rhythms as an entrepreneur today.

1. Consistency Builds Habits and Momentum

Consistency is showing up every single day, even when you don’t feel like it.

Doing this builds habits and momentum that will carry you toward your goals. It requires discipline to do this, which will serve you in all areas of life.

Discipline and consistency can be applied to many areas of your life. You might implement:

  • Exercising for 20 minutes each morning
  • Reading a chapter of a book before bed
  • Completing a guided meditation in the morning before looking at your phone
  • Staying focused on your lead generation, without interruption, for an hour every day

It doesn’t matter what it is, but start training your mind to be disciplined by showing up every day and doing the same thing. Not only do you show yourself you can do it, but you’ll soon see a spillover effect into every area of your life and work.

2. Consistency Leads to Mastery

Consistent practice gives you an opportunity to hone your skills. If you keep working at something, experiencing trial and error, and then correcting mistakes, you’ll become better at it. And if you do this over a long period of time, you master it.

You may have heard of the 10,000-hour rule which states that the key to achieving expertise in any area is simply a matter of practicing. Though some critique this “rule” as overly simplistic, the lesson still stands: natural talent is not all that’s required to master a skill—deliberate practice is necessary.

One reason practice is so important for mastery is that you’re exposed to a variety of situations and challenges to overcome. Whether it’s a new sales strategy or a difficult client, you learn each time you show up and do the work. And from there, you start to master whatever it is you are working on.

3. Consistency Builds Trust and Reliability

You might be working with the most talented and clever person out there, but what do you think of them if they don’t show up on time? Or when they’re unreliable? Your trust and opinion of them decrease.

Because here’s the thing: talent doesn’t guarantee reliability. Consistency does.

As you consistently show up and deliver results, you build trust with the people you are working with. They know they can count on you and trust you to get the job done. And they just might refer you to someone else.

Consistency builds trust and reliability which, in turn, offer up new business and entrepreneurial opportunities. You keep your current clients happy while also planting seeds for new referrals and business leads. This pays dividends in the future and boosts your business for the long haul.

4. Consistency Helps You Weather Challenges

There’s no way to sugarcoat things: Life is hard. Entrepreneurship is hard. You will face challenges and setbacks as you branch out into a new business or entrepreneurial venture.

But when you have a consistent routine and approach to your business and goals, you are better equipped to handle obstacles and keep moving forward.

Consistency builds resiliency. Because you show up consistently on the good days and bad ones, you are in a position to handle any curveballs or unexpected circumstances.

There are two key ways consistency helps you in the face of adversity:

  • Mindset: I believe that self-awareness is so key to success in life and as an entrepreneur. It’s not about being happy all the time, but about being aware of how you are feeling and reacting so you can make appropriate adjustments. But this takes time and practice. So, if you put in the work every day to engage in self-awareness practices, it becomes a natural response in the moment of crisis. You can step back and reframe your mindset in order to move forward because you’ve practiced doing exactly that.
  • Business systems: Your systems and processes can help you stay consistent in your entrepreneurial goals. So, when something unexpected or challenging comes up, you are ready with your routines and automations that help you stay focused in order to address the problem at hand.
Consistency Outpaces Talent for Entrepreneurs

Consistency creates stability and growth. Stability and growth bring peace. When you choose to be consistent, you are choosing a more peaceful life where you can focus on your goals and values.

Through consistency, we can all be the Kobe Bryant of our field or industry. It’s the true key to success because it builds habits and momentum and creates trust in your working relationships. Beyond that, it helps you achieve mastery in your skills while weathering any challenges and storms.
