5 Essentials Every Single Woman Needs in Their Home

Author:  Jamie Milam

What are the products that just make life easier? I know you have a list of them... I do, too! And while many, many things changed after my divorce, the list of practical items to make my single life easier also changed! Turns out there are some key essentials every single woman needs in their home to make things run a bit smoother.

Whether you're single, living on your own as a renter, newly divorced, or a solo first-time homebuyer—you've got some unique needs. Safety is always a top concern amongst single and solo-living ladies, and many are also looking for convenience, practicality, and luxury. We want our lives to be easier and more enjoyable—who doesn't?

So I've compiled a list of items that made my single life easier in the hopes that they'll make yours easier, too.

Ready? Crank that Beyoncé track and let's look at the five essentials every single woman needs in their home.

5 Essentials Every Single Woman Needs

Okay, maybe there aren't things that every single woman needs since we all live different lives, but I'll bet a lot of us will find these things handy! I know they sure make my life easier as an independent gal. So, without further ado, here are some single-woman must-haves to check out:

1. Tool Kit

Trust me ladies, this will come in handy so much more than you'd think. You'll use it to hang photos and decor, quick fixes, upgrade your hardware (think knobs and handles), or do any variety of DIY projects. And if you're unsure of how to use something or the best way to do so, there are honestly so many helpful YouTube videos out there that can walk you through it step-by-step.

You don't need anything too fancy, but all the basic tools are a must—especially that small level so your wall art will hang beautifully! I love this set because that 20V battery gets so much more done for me.

I personally also included this hedge trimmer in my kit, too, which helps me keep the HOA happy with the yard without having to pay the landscaping people extra to manage that for me. It's easy to use, and honestly pretty satisfying to see the end results.

2. Folding Ladder

I'm a shorty (5'1.5"... and, yes, the half-inch counts!) and if you're like me, you need help reaching a lot of things. I have a 3 step folding ladder that I use often—to reach things, to decorate the Christmas tree, to change the air filters.

If I'm honest though, and if you can swing it, I'd opt for a taller one because I still have a hard time reaching the air filters in rooms with higher ceilings and will likely need to upgrade now that my son has moved out. Or, I'll just save those to be changed for when he visits or the HVAC guy is here! But really, do yourself a favor and get something that will make reaching all the high places much easier (and safer!).

3. Cleaning Supplies

I understand everyone needs cleaning supplies, so it's not really a single-woman must-have, but upgrading your supplies is a power-woman move. Why? Because you can clean efficiently and effectively, exactly to the standards you want to set.

Here are four single-woman must-haves I recommend:

  • Cleaning brushes: Whether you are cutting back on expenses and no longer have a regular housekeeper, or if you just want to make life easier, these cleaning brushes that are an attachment for your drill are a back saver. Seriously, it gets the job done so much faster than a regular brush. There are several brands out there with a variety of brush sizes and styles, but I find that this little pack gets the job done just fine and you can't beat it for only $6.99!
  • Mold cleaner: While you're cleaning the bathroom, this mold cleaner is my secret weapon for any stubborn mildew spots on caulk or grout for my home, my Airbnb, and my clients who are preparing to sell their homes!
  • Carpet cleaner: I've raved on this one before, especially since Bissell recently made upgrades to their design (way easier to clean the machine this time!). If you have little ones or pets, this carpet cleaner steamer is a life-saver! As much as I hate to admit it, it's probably one of the most frequently used appliances in my house, aside from my Keurig.
  • Robot vacuum: Another appliance that makes my life so much simpler is my iRobot vacuum. Admittedly, this was a Mother's Day gift back in 2016, but I still use it weekly (and yes, the same one). I know it likely has had upgraded versions and I'm certain there are several other brands to choose from, but I can't speak to those. I just know that it's way easier for me to set the runtime schedule in the app and let it work on my behalf when I'm not home—gotta love leverage!

4. Expense Tracking Spreadsheet

An online tool I use monthly is this expense tracking spreadsheet, which helps me keep my budget on track and predictable. I always know where my money is going and what I'm spending it on. The spreadsheet also allows me to easily organize my bill companies, too, so it's a one-stop place for all-things financial.

Staying on top of your finances is super important, but many (newly) single or divorced women can struggle with it. Perhaps you weren't involved much in finances in your last relationship, or it just feels overwhelming now that you're on your own. That's why a simple but effective tracking spreadsheet is an essential for all single women to use. It doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to work!

Disclaimer: Always be careful keeping your passwords in a public location. Sites like LastPass.com offers a free password management plan.

5. Security Features

I'd be remiss if I left out security features on a list of must-haves for single women. It's one of the big concerns many of us have, and it's definitely an important area to invest in! Here are two security things single women may benefit from:

  • Doorbell camera: I personally use the Nest system—the Nest Doorbell Camera is great because I can see if someone is at the door, even if I just think I'm hearing things (IYKYK). My thermostats are set with Nest, and I also have an outdoor camera at each entry point of my house (back door and garage).
  • Smart deadbolt: The year of my divorce, I also added a smart deadbolt to my front door. This was easy to install myself without issue. It's app-driven, so I can set up for entry based on fingerprints or a code. The best part is that I can set up temporary or timed passcodes to share with the housekeeper or with friends and neighbors who are helping out with my pets while I'm out of town. No more keys hidden under doormats!

Whether you're fresh off a divorce or have been single a while, you can live a full and comfortable life... especially when you strategically utilize some of these five essentials every single woman needs in their home. Let's make life just that much easier!

So, try out some of these single-woman must-haves so you can get on with the more exciting things in life. And, let me know in the comments if I've missed anything!

To our independence!
